At weekends the soccer pitches across Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens are full of players of all ages.
William Torres, a coach with the New York Cafeteros, and referee Brayden Zapata both remember watching Colombia win against Uruguay at the 2014 World Cup, moving on to the quarter finals.
William, who was watching the match with with family, recalls a stunning goal by James RodrÃguez who went on to win the golden boot as the tournament’s top scorer.
He says the important thing about the upcoming World Cup will be how it provides inspiration for young players – male and female – in Queens.
Brayden was watching that match with friends. Moments like that stand out, he says, because you only experience them once – or if you’re lucky twice – in your life.
