After Spain won the World Cup final against Argentina fans spilled onto the sidewalk outside Casa Galicia on 31st Avenue in Astoria to celebrate.
Casa Galicia was founded in 1940 when, following the Spanish Civil War, a group of New Yorkers from Spain’s Northwestern territory of Galicia decided to create a place where they could come together to preserve their language, music and culture. The building in Astoria has been Casa Galicia’s home since 1994.
Gabriel, pictured below, said:
“This is one of main Spanish clubs in Queens. We all came here to watch the game and celebrate together. Thankfully Spain won! This place is like a second home. A lot of our parents immigrated, so we’re first generation. This is where we all get together and think of our home, our parents’ home, back in Spain.”
